Weekend Update
Jan 24, 2012, 7:27 pm

What an exciting weekend of hockey! The Fox FM Prairie Fire had a terrific weekend celebrating SaskEnergy's Hockey Day in Saskatchewan. Melville was awash with hockey celebrities and special events.

The Prairie Fire hosted the Swift Current Wildcats who were hot off a tir last weekend against the League's third place Weyburn Gold wings. Saturday's matchup was exciting from the first puck drop. After three periods of play and a additional five minutes of overtime the score remained 0-0! The teams shared the points , one each and each team's goaltenders garnered the game stars.

Sunday's game was no different. The crowd was given an exciting game that showed two periods scoreless and then back to back tallies for each team late in the third period to send it again to overtime! Fox FM Prairie Fire took the game on OT in dramatic fashion. Both Prairie Fire goals were scored by Fire captain Bailey Braden. She was the easy pick for game star.

The Prairie Fire return to action Wednesday January 25th in Milestone Sask, where they will matchup against the Weyburn Gold Wings. Puck Drop 8:00pm.

In other news three of our girls are on the mend get well soon Brooklyn McKenna, Alana Serhan and Nicole Clay.

The fire dressing room is making the transformation from storage room thanks to Blair Howat (a billet Dad and parent of alumni Cyanna Calfas) and Assistant Coach Kevin Kirkwood. Look for a work bee in the future to complete the room. Please let Kevin know if there are any special skills you're willing to donate.

Come out and support your FM Prairie Fire!!

Happy New Year
Jan 11, 2012, 7:16 pm

The Fox FM Prairie Fire started the 2012 year wearing off some turkey and holiday treats with a home and home series with Weyburn. After several practices and a return to classes the team was ready for Friday night January 6th. It was a tight game with the Fire surrendering in a exciting finish with the Fire pulling their goalie in a attempt to secure a tie.The final was 2-1 Weyburn.

The return game in Weyburn on January 8th saw another exciting game the the Fire leading for most of the game. A late Weyburn goal with four minutes remaining sent the game into overtime. The extra period solved nothing with the final score 2-2 and each team one point richer.

The Fox FM Prairie Fire will be home for the next two weekends. January 14th and 15th have the Fire hosting the North Battleford Sharks. Following a midweek game in Weyburn the Fire return to home ice and Hockey Day in Saskatchewan against the visiting Swift Current Wildcats. Game times are Sturday at 4:00pm and Sunday at noon.

The team is very excited to be part of Hockey Day in Saskatchewan and look forward to packing the Horizon Credit Union Centre. So come out and support your Prairie Fire!!

Merry Christmas
Dec 19, 2011, 11:03 pm

The last two weeks had the Prairie Fire on the road for 3 games and 1 home game at the Horizon Credit Union Centre. The games resulted in an exciting win against the Regina Rebels at the Co-operators to make it a shut-out and garnering 2 points. The Saskatoon weekend showed 2 losses against the Stars.

With several practices in the upcoming week the Prairie Fire prepares for the Christmas break from school and hockey. The holiday season gives the players and the Billets a chance to recuperate and wind down from a hectic schedule. The Billets and the billet program are a key component to the Prairie Fire team and a huge Thank You to the billet families for taking in and making our player’s part of their family and home.

Santa made and early trip to the Prairie Fire’s Team meeting last week where the new
dressing room at the Horizon Credit Union Centre was unveiled. The players got
a preview of their new player stations and in each station Santa delivered a
Prairie Fire travel bag customized with PF colors and numbers! Thank you Santa.

The Prairie Fire organization would like to thank Mayor Walter Streelasky and wife Carol for stopping by the game, bringing post-game baking for the players, and bringing best wishes from the City of Melville.

Nicole Clay Earns Leagues 2nd Star Award for Nov
Dec 5, 2011, 8:10 pm

The Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League is pleased to announce the monthly three star awards for November 2011. Topping the list as the First
Star
is Emily Clark of the Saskatoon Stars. Clark is currently leading the
league in scoring with 33 points in 14 league games. Clark’s exceptional skating ability, work ethic and her ability to see the ice has not only lead her to the top of the
league stats sheets but has also been noticed nationally as she is the only
Saskatchewan player to be named to Canada’s Under 18 team. Clark will represent our country at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship.

The Second Star for November goes to Nicole Clay a 16 year old goaltender in her second year with the Melville Fox FM Prairie Fire.Clay’s.939 save percentage is the highest among all goalies who have appeared in more than 2 contests. Clay has faced an
average of 35 shots in her 7 appearances this year and has yet to allow more
than 3 goals in any game. She has provided solid support for a young Prairie Fire defensive squad.

November’s Third Star goes to a dynamic 16 year old from Canwood, SK who suits up for the Prince Albert Bears. Kaitlyn Willoughby currently leads the Bears with 17 points on 9 goals and 8 assists. She has hit the score sheet on 50% of the goals scored by the Bears so far this season including two short handed goals and 2 game winners. As an
assistant captain for the Bears, Willoughby’s leadership abilities are invaluable to a young Bear’s squad. Willoughby represented Saskatchewan at the Under 18 National
Championships held in Quebec in early November.

Weekend Update 2
Dec 5, 2011, 8:07 pm

The last two weekends highlighted a home and home series with PA’s A&W Bears. The home games in the Horizon Credit Union Centre resulted in an exciting tie with several
shots ringing the cross bar and posts! The second game was disappointing loss with the Fire pulling the goaltender in the remaining seconds to try to force overtime but the drive ended with an empty net goal with 11 seconds remaining.

On the road, the game in Melfort resulted in a nail biting 1-0 loss and then on to P.A. for a hard fought 3-1 victory! All four games were very close and netted the Prairie Fire three points.

Some disappointing news was the cancellation of the Grand Forks tournament slated for the first part of December. The coaching staff and manager are working to find exhibition games or another tournament to fill the gap in the league schedule.

The Prairie Fire was invited to The Mac’s Tournament in Calgary over Christmas, but the offer was turned down after a vote by the Fire families.

The upcoming weekend features the Saskatoon Stars travelling to Melville for a 7:30 game on Saturday night and winding up with a 1:30 game
on Sunday.

Come out and Support your Prairie Fire!!

Weekend Update with Tim Clay
Oct 30, 2011, 11:05 am

The Home Opener was a great success! The Food Bank was the overall winner with many donations of non-perishable items at the door. Prairie Fire lost an end to end battle with Rebels but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the team who are looking forward to a future of playing in the new Horizon Credit Union Centre. It was a well fought game ending with an exciting push from The Fire when they pulled their goalie in the last minute of play to go for the tie. The drive was stopped by an empty net goal at 19:57 and a final score of 4-2 before a crowd of over 200 fans!

Prairie Fire had lots of behind the scenes help in making the night a success. Kudos to announcer Paul Kuntz, who walked us through the history of the Fox FM Prairie Fire and into the 2011-12 roster of the players and where they originated. Thanks to Lisa Kirkwood of RE/MAX Blue Chip Realty and others who donated prizes, including Rider tickets, for the draws. Great to see the alumni, the Melville Community and the Billet Parents who came out to support the Prairie Fire Opener and making the evening a re-sounding success!

The Prairie Fire players continued their Food Bank Drive on Saturday rounding up 2011 lbs. in donations from the Melville Community, handily beating the past record of 1914lbs.! (Check out the photos in the Photo Gallery section) It appears that it wasn’t all hardwork as the girls had a great bonding experience and a lot of fun!

The Prairie Fire has started a fund raising venture, selling calendars. These calendars feature nostalgic hockey scenes that will touch the heart of anyone who had children or themselves in hockey. They will make an excellent Christmas present and are available for sale from all Prairie Fire families. For a preview of The Hockey Spirit Calendar please go to:

Bill McIntosh is heading this initiative and he can be
contacted for more information through the Contact Us section of the Prairie
Fire website.

2011-12 HOCKEY SEASON KICKS OFF
Oct 24, 2011, 9:43 pm

The Prairie Fire Midget AAA started the 2011-12 year by replacing 11 graduating veterans with a squad of players over two training camps and several exhibition games.

The Prairie Fire organization wishes all the graduating players continued success in their academic and hockey careers! They are representing the Organization well at many University and Colleges and on many hockey teams through-out Canada and the U.S.

The team is headlined by returning Coach Dan Cross, Assistant Coach Kevin Kirkwood and Assistant Coach Greg Vaughn. The Prairie Fire Organization puts team management into the capable hands of Kurtis Lindskog as manager and Lisa Kirkwood as treasurer.

With a slow start to the regular season schedule the Prairie Fire has kept busy this fall with tournaments in Winnipeg, their own tournament in Melville and several exhibition series with Yellowhead & Westman . Their first road series in North Battleford netted them two wins 2-1 & 5-1 respectively. The last weekend series in Swift Current saw them lose a barnburner in overtime 2-1 and a 2-0 Fire win for a weekend of 3 out of 4
points!

The team is excited about the upcoming game in Melville on October 28, which is their home opener in Melville’s new arena, the Horizon Credit Union Centre. The team is looking to “pack the house” so come on out to support the Prairie Fire! The team is using the opening night to kick-off their food bank drive, so bring a non-perishable food item to the game on Friday night and help with their collection!

Melville Comprehensive School is again offering The Hockey Academy, a high school credit course, for Prairie Fire players. The course runs five days a week with alternating days on ice with Mr. Kittleson, off ice training and instruction in physical fitness with Mr. Alspach.

Melville Comprehensive School Hockey Academy
Apr 3, 2011, 7:16 pm

The first year of the Melville Comprehensive School's Hockey Academy was a resounding success.  Players from the Prairie Fire along with other female hockey players were given the opportunity to take part in a daily hockey academy class as they worked towards a  high school credit.  The Academy will continue next year providing the members of the class with an opportunity to work on individual skills along with their strength and conditioning.  The folowing link provides an overview of the program as reported by our local CTV station.

The Prairie Fire hockey club wishes to extend a big Thank You to everyone who had a part in contributing to the two benefit games held to support the Mish family.  The games in Melville and Yorkton were amazing successes and something that we know will be a tremendous support for Melissa.  A link to the CTV news coverage is below:
